This is an ideal edition for someone with no prior knowledge of the Bible, who is interested in it as a work of literature and for its influence on subsequent literature, philosophy and art.

As has been pointed out by other reviewers, the editors’ commentary approaches the text from a higher critic’s, and not a fundamentalist’s, point-of-view. The Authorized Version is put in its historical and literary context, and the original documents are criticised and discussed from a non-partisan perspective, as one would criticise any other collection of ancient texts. They do not mince their words about the “hard passages”: the numerous rapes, bloody murders, and ethnic cleansings, and the issue of Christian antisemitism is not avoided.

The commentary is not voluminous: the majority of this formidable brick of a book is made up of the 1611 text itself, printed on thicker-than-usual paper for bibles; the commentary occupies less than a centimetre out of this tome’s two inches plus. However it is enough to guide one through their reading (make that skim-reading in the case of the extensive genealogies, censuses, lists of laws, and instructions for constructing temples and curing lepers).

The text is absolutely complete, containing not only the Apocrypha (Deuterocanonical books) but the original lengthy preface by the translators, offering a defence of a new translation of the Word of God into the English tongue.

As the Introduction says, the Bible is the basic book of “our” [i.e. Western, Christian] civilization. Yet to begin at the beginning we are confronted with stories about people whose wealth was measured in donkeys and camels.

What you have in its pages is the very beginning of Christianity, and the foundation on which was built the philosophy and literature of all Christian culture for two thousand years. It is the beginning but not the end, and it is (at times) interesting to read through these simple, humble, and at times bewildering stories, and meandering and confusing treatises and contrast them to the rigor and elaborateness of Christian philosophy and theology and the majesty and strength of Christian art.

Well this bible is perfect for me. For me the richness of this version of the bible cannot be beaten. I have other versions of the bible but I think that the King James is nearer to the original versions written in Hebrew and Greek. The author traces the various attempts to produce a version of the complete Bible - Old and New Testaments, which as one earlier translator put it could be understood by every ploughboy. He did not expect "every ploughboy" to be able to read it himself, but to be able to understand it on hearing it read. Gordon Campbell makes it clear that the aim of the compilers of the King James Bible was similar. Thus although to modern readers and hearers the language of the King James Bible may seem archaic and in places obscure that would not have been the impression made on those reading and hearing it when it was first published and for many generations thereafter. In this context it is worth remembering that for many years, and indeed well into the early years of the last century men and women of little, if any, formal education seem to have had no difficulty in understanding its language. This review is from: Bible: The Story of the King James Version 1611-2011 (Hardcover)

This is not a book for the faint-hearted.It is scholarly, well illustrated and packed with historical facts. The author traces the various attempts to produce a version of the complete Bible – Old and New Testaments, which as one earlier translator put it could be understood by every ploughboy. He did not expect “every ploughboy” to be able to read it himself, but to be able to understand it on hearing it read. Gordon Campbell makes it clear that the aim of the compilers of the King James Bible was similar. Thus although to modern readers and hearers the language of the King James Bible may seem archaic and in places obscure that would not have been the impression made on those reading and hearing it when it was first published and for many generations thereafter. In this context it is worth remembering that for many years, and indeed well into the early years of the last century men and women of little, if any, formal education seem to have had no difficulty in understanding its language. Gordon Campbell does make the interesting point that by the date of the “new” Bible’s publication in 1611 “thou” and “thee” had fallen out of use.
Gordon Cambell’s book would make a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in Church history and the evolution of the English language.

Campbell has done an excellent job by tracing the KJV right from its beginning to the present day. A must read for those who want to know, why after 400 years, the KJV is still the best translation, based on the superior Masoretic Text (OT) Textus Receptus (NT)of the Holy Bible.

It is a compelling read, written so well that the story is never dry, as it might have been. This is clearly a work of love, by a man with a deep understanding of, and an infectious enthusiasm for, his subject. It seems to have been consciously pitched at US and UK readers, which is perfectly sensible, but Oxford's production, in my edition anyway, is another matter. The typesetting is not of the first water and the paper is rather starkly white. Furthermore, the book seems not to have been stitched, which I think is unwise in a hardback; the pages of my copy began dropping out as soon as I opened it. The reader deserves better than this and so does he author. This is that rarest of things – a book that will appeal to scholars as well as interested ignoramuses such as myself. It is a compelling read, written so well that the story is never dry, as it might have been. This is clearly a work of love, by a man with a deep understanding of, and an infectious enthusiasm for, his subject. It seems to have been consciously pitched at US and UK readers, which is perfectly sensible, but Oxford’s production, in my edition anyway, is another matter. The typesetting is not of the first water and the paper is rather starkly white. Furthermore, the book seems not to have been stitched, which I think is unwise in a hardback; the pages of my copy began dropping out as soon as I opened it. The reader deserves better than this and so does he author. So, five stars for the wonderful text but two stars for the production quality.

Campbell has done an excellent job by tracing the KJV right from its beginning to the present day.
